Working Remotely or Office Working?

0

The trend of working remotely is growing, and we don’t expect it to stop for a long time. Working Remotely: Is It Right For You?
For me it sounds like a dream-com-true. Currently I am working remotely and I like it. Why?
Because I like the flexibility of working remotely.

Please let me know what you think of working remotely in the comments!

It's really comfortable.
I don't waste my time for driving to work.

On the other hand a home should not be a place where you do your job. Also, try working home with small child next room...

It gets difficult to control your work time. Some people tend to do a lot of overtime if they work from home. Others on the contrary. Apart from that it's difficult if you work in a team and need to communicate with other people often.

I think that people to often treat working remotely and working from home equally. Working remotely gives you a great possibility to work from wherever you want and doesn't restrain you to work from home. I chose to live in a small city where IT job market is almost non existing so working remotely is the only option. As ŁF said, your home should not be a place where you do your job especially when you have small kids (I have two :)) so I'm renting a small office which is very close to my home. There are many other options to work remotely and working from home is only one of them.

As for the remote work itself I think that it has pros and cons as every other aspect of our jobs. It's not ideal for everyone out there but I think that there should be much more companies giving people a choice between office and remote working.

Yes, at the beginning of working remotely it's hard to manage your time) But in our company we have some application for controlling time. When developer start to work he should log in and at the end - log out. Also, there are a lot of applications for communication remotely (e.g. hip-chat, redmine, wiki etc.)

Work home is good when you live alone with cat))

I disagree. If you live alone with a cat you are in dire need of some human interaction or you're going to get nuts at some point ;)

Some people find it convenient, some don't.

Personally, I like to talk to people and find easier to solve problems through face-to-face conversation instead of sending several e-mails or via chat. It's just simpler and more effective. Still, some tasks can be completed remotely. Especially a lot of developement can be done in such way.

And short notice on the time management. IMO "Log in" doesn't change much. Disorganized person will still suffer from his/hers habits.

In that case work is impossible at all, every attempt ends with cat sitting on keyboard.

Why not?
At home I have a big desk, the most comfortable chair, my favorite music on speakers (not headphones), and there is no air conditioning (wich make me constantly sick when I work at office).
Why exacly shouldn't this be a place to do my job?

I can understand statement "Home should not be your work". I have the same approach. Why?

  1. Home for me it's place where I can rest. I cannot rest when I have feeling that right next to me there is something related with work.
Friend of mine has office in the same place where he is sleeping. After 17 o clock he is just leaving home because he does not want to feel pressure of "that feeling" (it's hard to explain)
  2. In home there are always things TODO and it's disturbing my work-phase. Kids are ringing to home, cats want to have fun with me, there is "that stuff that you wanted to fix it but never had time to do it"

Working from home it's not for everyone. I would say it is only for people that can make separation in their own house. For that you need 1 extra room (where you work) and good mental attitude. I know I am less productive at home then at work. Because of that I am feeling guilty and I want to work more, because of that I cannot rest at my home

I do not know this feeling.

When I work at office, I take short breaks from time to time - to get coffee, to look outside the window, to chat a little bit. Just to relax my mind.
At home I do this breaks to, but here I can spend this time more productive - I can fill up and start a washing machine or water my plants. Takes 5 minutes, my mind has a break and something is done, so I have more time for pleasures later.
For me, it's more relaxing to not waste any time ;) When I waste time I do it in more sufficent way, playing sims all night or something :P

Kids are ringing to home, cats want to have fun with me, there is "that stuff that you wanted to fix it but never had time to do it"

You know, that kids can call your cell phone? And that you don't HAVE TO answer the home phone?
I have two cats and don't see the problem, as I can allways just scream "pssssi!" and they leave me alone. But I preffer to take one on my lap to keep myself warm ;)
And as for things that you never had time to do... Well, when you're at work (from home) you don't have time to do it either! Do you think about it when you're resting at home? Because you know, that would be a great time to think about it.

And I don't have an extra room for that, I live in single-room apartment.
