For any who care, I thought this info might come in handy. This is
copied from a different forum and I haven't tested it, so keep that in

Windows XP Update, the workaround

Hello! It has come to my attention that Windows XP might cease to
function (or you
might not be able to go to Windows Update -- or you might have to
activate Windows)
when you install Service Pack 1 if (and only if) you installed it
using the CD-KEY
"*****-*****-YXRKT-8TG6W-2B7Q8"

If you haven't already installed Windows XP, then please use
"DP2RT-3B8YR-4JXWB-HHGPK-82FWB"

There'll be no more problems if you install Windows XP using the
CD-KEY
"DP2RT-3B8YR-4JXWB-HHGPK-82FWB" -- and you can then install Service
Pack 1 without
a problem.

This is the very first time that Microsoft has introduced this new
anti-piracy measure, but as usual, it can be defeated ;-)
Unfortunately, there is no way
to simply change CD-KEY's, so you'll have to reinstall Windows XP and
use
"DP2RT-3B8YR-4JXWB-HHGPK-82FWB" -- or just follow the instructions
below so you
won't have to reinstall.

If you installed using "*****-*****-YXRKT-8TG6W-2B7Q8" then you must
reinstall
or change the CD-KEY (regardless of what language it is -- English,
French, Dutch,
etc.).

Click "Start" at the bottom, right-hand corner of the screen and go to
"Run..."
Type in "regedit" and click "OK" (or press ENTER).

Click the "+" next to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"
Click the "+" next to "SOFTWARE"
Click the "+" next to "Microsoft"
Click the "+" next to "Windows NT"
Click the "+" next to "CurrentVersion"
Click "WPAEvents"
On the right, double click on "OBBETimer" and change at least one
digit of this value to
deactivate windows (ie: double click "71" and change it to "44" or
whatever).

Click "OK" and close the Registry Editor.
Click "Start" at the bottom, right-hand corner of the screen and go
to "Run..."
Type in "%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a" and click "OK" (or
press ENTER).

This will bring up the "Activate Windows" window.

Check the option for "Yes, I want to telephone a customer service
representative to activate Windows" and click "Next"

Then click "Change Product Key" (don't enter any information on that
screen)

Type in the new key (DP2RT-3B8YR-4JXWB-HHGPK-82FWB) and click "Update"

At the next window, click "Remind Me Later" and restart your computer.

Click "Start" at the bottom again (to see if everything's okay),
right-hand corner of the
screen and go to "Run..."
Type in "%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a" and click "OK" (or
press ENTER).

If you see "Windows is already activated" then break out the
Champaign!
You're safe now. Install Service Pack 1 when you get it, and enjoy!!
;-)

If you have done this wrong or you typed in the key incorrectly you
will not be able to
boot. Hit F8 and select "Last known good configuration" to restore and
try again.

This method works 100% guaranteed. I've taken a lot of time to make
sure everything is
perfect and that the instructions are as easy to follow as possible. I
know a lot of this is
very redundant, but I just wanted it so a 5-year-old could do it if
need be ;-) Just make
sure you follow the instructions very carefully.
