Last October, you asked for an update to Borland C++Builder 6 to support your mission-critical C/C++ development projects. We listened, and began development of a new C/C++ language personality within Borland Developer Studio (BDS), alongside the C#, Delphi for Win32, and Delphi for .NET personalities. We wanted to take this opportunity to update you on our progress and give you a heads-up on what to expect in the next few months.
As we near the ship date of Borland Developer Studio, the IDE core, Delphi for Win32, Delphi for .NET and C# language personalities are looking solid, but the C/C++ personality still needs work. This is in no way intended to criticize the work of our excellent C++ development team; the upgrades and migration work necessary from C++Builder 6 are simply much larger in scope than those from Delphi 2005. At the end of the day, our engineers and field testers are not yet confident that the C/C++ personality has reached the same level of quality and performance as the rest of the studio. However, we did not want the Delphi community to have to wait to get their hands on the product, nor hide the significant progress the C++ team has already made, so we have decided to release Borland Developer Studio to manufacturing later this week. This release will provide customers with production Delphi for Win32, Delphi for .NET, and C# personalities, and with a Technology Preview of the C/C++ personality, to allow C++ developers to get a first look at some of the great new features we have like build options, live code templates, the latest VCL, and much more. We will follow up the Technology Preview with a downloadable update (free to all BDS customers, of course) by the end of December that will update the C++ personality to full production status.
In an effort to make our product development as transparent as possible, and to help our customers make informed decisions about the timing of their purchase, we will also shortly be publishing the major known issues in BDS on Borland Developer Network Quality Central site (qc.borland.com), including those within the C/C++ Technology Preview.
Please rest assured that the team is continuing to work diligently to make the C++ support within BDS everything you expect from a mission-critical development environment from Borland.
Sincerely,
David Intersimone,
Vice President Developer Relations and Chief Evangelist
